Procedure

  1. Scrape off the scales and clean and slice the mackerels. Wash the mackerel pieces well in plenty of water. Apply the salt and turmeric powder to them, and let them marinate for around 20 minutes.
  2. In the meanwhile, soak the tamarind in a little hot water for around 10 minutes and remove the seeds from the Sichuan peppers (tepal or teflam / teplam) and lightly crush them.
  3. Next, grind the grated coconut, sliced onion, soaked tamarind along with the water, ground pepper, cumin powder, coriander powder, crushed ginger, garlic cloves, and the turmeric powder with a little water to a smooth paste.
  4. Add the masala to a pot, dilute it with a little water so the curry is not too thick or too thin, and stir in ½ tsp of salt and the Sichuan peppers. Bring the curry to a boil.
  5. Lower the heat and let the curry simmer for around 5 minutes.
  6. Gently add in the fish pieces, and the slit green chillies, and let the fish cook in the curry on medium-low heat for around 8 minutes. (Do not stir the curry while the fish is cooking. Just hold the pot and swirl the curry around.)
  7. Taste the curry and add some more salt as needed. Turn off the heat.
  8. Wait for around 5 minutes and then serve the curry.

Enjoy!
