Mario Miranda: A ‘mando’ underway at a Goan reception

On December 11, 2011, India lost one of her pioneering and renowned cartoonists, and Goa an illustrious son. A great modern-day Goan personality, Mario Miranda, passed away at his home in Loutolim.

Then on January 18 this year, the legendary music composer and arranger – Anthony Gonsalves, the real Anthony Gonsalves, died in Goa at the age of 84, and Goa lost yet another great son. Gonsalves composed memorable musical arrangements for a number of Hindi film songs including the popular “Aayega, aayega, aayega aanewala” from Mahal, and “Hum aapki aankhon mein” from Pyaasa picturised on the multi-talented Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha. Embrace the positives

Kick the ‘glass half empty’ attitude!

glass half fullFor most working people, the commencement of the senior citizen years coincides with becoming a retiree. As the date of retirement draws near, many people eagerly await their freedom from the rat race and look forward to relaxing at home. But once they’ve hung up their boots, and made the transition to retired life, they find things aren’t as rosy on this side of the fence. They find retirement is a big pain in the… no, not necessarily in just one commonly quoted place, but literally in a whole lot of places.  If it’s not the shoulder, it could be the neck. If it’s not the neck, it’s the back, and if it’s not that, it’s the knees… you get the picture. Aches, pains, boredom… grrr… why did all the good stuff have to happen before 60? Many seniors give in to rants like this. Mostly the grumpy ones. Some are concerned about getting out of shape, others about looking less attractive. And then there are some senior citizens like me who don’t care a fig about wrinkles – or laughter lines or whatever it is they’re calling them nowadays – and who have to look in the mirror to be reminded that they’re no longer spring chickens. That time is marching on. Continue reading

Goan mandos

Goa’s sublime musical creation

It was cool and pleasant up in the hill station of Panchgani where we were spending our summer holiday in the late 1950s.  On the very first night, after dinner, my parents and the rest of our group were relaxing in the cosy living room of the cottage we had rented; my younger sister Vera, a two-year old toddler then, and I were looking out of one of the open windows. Vera was standing on a chair and I had a protective arm around her to make sure she didn’t fall off.

The Panchgani countryside was cloaked in darkness except for a few lights from homesteads twinkling in the distance. Cool breezes wafted in bringing with them the fragrances of night queen flowers and eucalyptus. I guess the nip in the air and the soothing breezes got the grown-ups in the mood for singing for they suddenly broke into song (singing in voices – primeiro and segundo), beginning with the aptly titled Konkani mandoSontos bhogta re jivako” (I feel the joy of life). This is my earliest memory of listening to a Goan mando. Continue reading

Speak up!

Have you laughed lately?

An old man decided his old wife was getting hard of hearing. So he called her doctor to make an appointment to have her hearing checked.

The Doctor said he could see her in two weeks, and meanwhile there’s a simple, informal test the husband could do to give the doctor some idea of the degree of hearing loss. Continue reading

The adventure begins…

the adventure beginsThe swinging sixties!

Yay! I’m now a sexagenarian. Maybe some of you are wondering what the heck that means… Well, don’t let the first three letters of that strange-sounding word give you any funny ideas. All I’m saying is, I’ve survived the fifties, I’ve leaped over, (no, make that clambered over) the 60 barrier and I’m now in the swinging sixties. Wait a minute… SIXTIES did I say? I’m already in the seventh decade of my life? Gosh! Where did all that time go? Seems like just yesterday that I was practising how to jive to the beats of Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse Rock or the Beatles number When I saw her standing there or other foot-tapping songs that hit the airwaves on Radio Ceylon’s Binaca Hit Parade or All India Radio’s Saturday Date. Have I really been married for more than three decades? And how come I’m already a mother-in-law when I was a multi-tasking young mother only yesterday? Wasn’t it only the other day that I was crooning You are my sunshine from my heart as I put my boys to sleep? How could time have flown so fast? Continue reading
