Natural cures for depression and anxiety that cost nothing

Dealing with depression and anxiety naturally

natural cures for depression and anxietyHave you ever checked the results thrown up by recent mental health surveys? If you have, then you’ll agree that it really is a mad, mad, mad, mad world we’re living in today. According to the International Mental Health Research Organisation, the life of every fifth person in the world today is affected by some mental illness or the other. And the World Health Organisation  says that one in every four persons is likely to develop a mental disorder at some point in his or her lifetime. That’s how alarming the mental state of our world is.

World Mental Health Day

Just yesterday, on the 10th of October, the world celebrated World Mental Health Day. And currently, many countries are observing Mental Health Awareness Week. This year, the theme of World Mental Health Day being “Mental health and older adults”, the emphasis is on helping seniors and retired people stay mentally healthy and live fuller, and happier lives. Great Goans: Bakibab Borkar (1910 – 1984)

Legendary Goan poet B. B. Borkar

bakibab borkarHis poetry is a celebration of his Goan-ness, every word drenched in a deep understanding and a passionate enjoyment of all things Goan. Only someone Goan to the core could have written:

Please Sir, Mr. God of Death,

Don’t make it my turn today,

not today,

there is fish curry for dinner.

Which Goan worth his salt wouldn’t identify with this crazy craving for fish curry? Or onfish curry rice reading these lines wouldn’t envision tanatalizing images of thick, fragrant fish curry trickling its way into the spaces between plump grains of steamed unpolished rice? And not just these lines, but all the works of Goa’s legendary poet Balkrishna Bhagwant Borkar exude the very essence of Goa, her sublime natural beauty and the character and foibles of her people.

A multi-lingual poetic genius

B. B. Borkar or Bakibab Borkar as he was fondly called was born on 30 November, 1910, in the village of Curchorem. Raised in a devout Hindu joint family, as a child he would wake up to the chants of bhajans and abhangas resounding through his ancestral house in Borim. Continue reading

Earning money from freelance writing – 5

Learning the craft of writing

developing the craft of writingConsider the following paragraph:

The name of the slum was Annawadi. It was close to the airport and was surrounded by posh hotels. The hotels had many floors and from the upper windows you could see the filthy slum Annawadi below.

Nothing wrong with it. The sentences are grammatically correct. They make sense too. But what the piece lacks is quality. Now read the paragraph below.

Serving the airport clientele, and encircling Annawadi, were five extravagant hotels: four ornate, marbly megaliths and one sleek blue-glass Hyatt, from the top-floor windows of which Annawadi and several adjacent squatter settlements looked like villages that had been airdropped into gaps between elegant modernities.

“Everything around us is roses” is how Abdul’s younger brother, Mirchi, put it. “And we’re the shit in between.” Continue reading

Between husbands and wives – Part 1

Have you laughed lately?

“You don’t stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing.”  That’s what Michael Pritchard the humorous motivational speaker once said. So don’t forget to have a good laugh now and then. It works better than any other medicine.

Here’s a double dose of laughter for today – about jolts along a road called marriage. Continue reading

The fascinating stories behind the lyrics of Goan mandos

Goan mandos: Sagas linked to their soul-stirring lyrics

goan mandoAfter the brief introduction to some of the major Goan mando composers in my last post, it’s time to move on to the lyrics of their superb compositions. I’m sure you’ll agree that the ingredients required for creating a memorable song are good music and good lyrics. And our mando composers have walked that line with distinction. They’ve given us timeless melodies whose magic is further enhanced by poignant lyrics. Lyrics that tug at our heart-strings, words that have the power to make generations of Goans want to listen to these mandos over and over again. Continue reading

What the heck is a “real man” anyway?

What does being a real man mean?

george osborne weepingWhat made me ponder over a stupid question like this, was reading the big story of the day as reported in newspapers across the UK, Australia, and elsewhere soon after Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on April 17. From The Sun and the Daily Mail, and the Daily Star to the Guardian, almost every major paper found that an important male politician, (in this case Britain’s Finance Minister, George Osborne,) shedding tears at a funeral, (in this case, the Iron Lady’s funeral,) was something so startling, so odd, that they all chose to splash this across their front pages. The secret to aging slowly

A simple anti-aging remedy

the secret to aging slowlyDo you often make Mr. Bean-like faces when you see people (ordinary people whom you know, not film stars or Page 3 celebrities) who are as old as or older than you, but look like they’re much younger, and wonder, “How come they’ve aged less than I have?” Well, no one can prevent aging, but it is certainly possible to slow down the aging process and live an active life much longer.

We seniors may have retired from service, but we don’t have to retire from leading a full life. No matter how old you are, you need to continue to enrich your life. And you’ll be able to do this even better if you understand the secret to aging slowly. Great Goans: Luis de Menezes Braganza (1878 – 1938)

The Tilak of Goa

the braganza house, chandorIf you stop by the village of Chandor in Salcete, Goa, today, you won’t see any trace of the swagger of its heyday when it used to be the capital city of the Kadambas and a thriving centre of trade and commerce. What you’ll see is a serene rural landscape dotted by a clutch of stately colonial mansions which were once the dwellings of the aristocracy. But the grandest of these opulent landmarks is the two-storey Braganza House, stretching along all of 400 ft., and nestling amidst decorative palms and flowering shrubs just a few metres down the road from Chandor’s 17th century Nossa Senhora de Belem Church. Earning money from freelance writing – 4

How to start freelance writing

how to start freelance writingIt’s never too early or too late to become a writer. Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolfe started writing in their twenties. Others like Sir Walter Scott were late bloomers, publishing their novels after they crossed sixty. So no matter what your age, let’s move on to learning how to start a freelance writing career. Well, freelance writing is a broad term covering many forms of writing; therefore before taking the plunge you should first narrow down the various options and find a niche that suits you and your interests the best. To do this you have to ask yourself a few important questions.

Writing full time or part time?

The first question you have to tackle once you’ve decided to earn money from freelance writing, is what exactly you’re interested in. Writing full time, part-time, or on the side in your free time. If you already have a regular job or if you’re retired, and you now want to exploit your love of writing to earn a few extra bucks on the side, that’s a great idea. No major decisions involved there. Spread some love on Valentine’s Day

Make your life sweeter

make life sweetGrowing older is inevitable. Chronologically, I mean, not in spirit. We have to grow older, but we don’t have to grow bitter. Being bitter and resentful is a sure formula for unhappiness and for adding on more wrinkles, faster. Bitterness is like a poisonous plant, like a tumour, that will take hold of your mind and fill it with negative feelings till there is no joy left in your life at all. Not just that, it will also give rise to physical problems.  Dr. S. I. McMillan, in his bestseller “None of These Diseases,” says, “Anger, unhandled, will show itself in at least 50 diseases.”

So instead of becoming bitter, why not make your life sweeter? How? There are many ways, but one of the best ways to achieve this is by spreading some love to those around you. Reach out in love to your loved ones, to people you know as well as to those you don’t. And what better day to begin adding sweetness to your life than today, on Valentine’s Day? A day when people show their family and friends how much they mean to them, and how much they care for them. Continue reading
